Spring is finally here and with it, track season. The McKenzie teams have been out running the lanes and wearing down their shoes for a few weeks now. The weather has been it’s usual temperamental self...rain, hail, sun, and even an inch of snow on the ground for April Fool’s Day.
I went up to the track last week on the first sunny day available to take pictures and meet the new coaches. Kayla Johnston lived here during the Holiday Farm Fire. She had to move on for a few years but was given the opportunity to relocate anywhere she and her husband wished. McKenzie Bridge is dear to their hearts so it's nice to welcome them back.

Angelo Santiago is a former decathlete who has gifted our kids with his coaching skills in not only track, but also football and basketball. He makes the 50 mile plus drive all the way from Springfield to Blue River several times a week to help our young athletes to find the best in themselves. I got to watch first-hand as Angelo explained ways the throwers could improve their form and get more power behind their efforts. The kids were really receptive to the lessons.

Sandra and Allen Acevado have taken on the middle school track coaching roles for a second season. Last year they were super successful, guiding our mid-kids to set multiple new school records. It's great to see parents get involved with their kids' sports. Probably one of the best gifts you can give because without coaches these kids wouldn't be able to play.
Here are a few of the highlights from practice last Thursday. Our first home meet is April 26th when we host the AMJ meet. Come on out, give some cheers, and a big thank you to the coaches who are helping make this season possible.
